A clean-up drive was organised at the Ooty Race Course on Monday. Since the land was taken over by Horticulture Department, it lacked maintenance.

A clean-up of the Ooty Race Course was conducted on Monday by various organisations to mark World Nature Conservation Day as well as to bring attention to the embattled wetland which is being developed by the State Horticulture Department.Volunteers from the Confederation of Environment Associations of Nilgiris (CEAN), Kotagiri Citizens Welfare Association (KCWA), Citizens Forum of Ootacamund as well as other organisations participated in the event.Arun Bellie from the KCWA told The Hindu the clean-up was also conducted to bring awareness to the development works that are being undertaken on the Ooty Race Course without requisite clearances from the Tamil Nadu State Wetlands Authority. They said that since work began, that the race course was being used by tipplers as a drinking spot, and that people were also illegally dumping garbage there.The volunteers also wanted to bring awareness about the new waste management rules which mandated that waste be segregated at source.
