Sanitation workers remove plastic waste and garbage from Pothuraju canal as part of ‘Operation Clean Sweep’ drive in Ongole on Wednesday.

As a part of the month-long ‘Operation Clean Sweep’ programme in the State, the Ongole Municipal Corporation (OMC) launched a clean up drive of Pothuraju canal along 60-feet road in the city on Wednesday.Prakasam District Collector P. Raja Babu participated in the programme and inspected the desilting works. While creating awareness among the people, he called upon the public to take their share of responsibility in solid waste management.Speaking to media on the occasion, the Collector said, “’Operation Clean Sweep has been undertaken in the district for a month as per the instructions of the State government. As part of this special drive, people were made aware of the importance of keeping the roads clean in the first week.”“The focus now is on the management of canal and drainages in the second week. The Central government has formulated special rules for the management of solid waste as per the orders of the Supreme Court,” the Collector informed. The Collector further said that such programmes are being implemented every week as per the guidelines of the State government to implement solid waste management rules. He urged the public not to use plastic and not to throw plastic or other waste into the canals.Mr. Raja Babu also said that steps were being taken by the OMC to keep the city clean. He urged the people to do their part and cooperate with the authorities in maintaining sanitation. He said that cleanliness brings health as well as respect.PDCC Bank chairman Kamepalli Seetharamaiah, Agricultural Market Committee chairman Rachagarla Venkat Rao, OMC Commissioner Venkata Krishnaiah, and representatives of ITC participated in the programme.
