Residents in Macassar are complaining that piles of dredged debris from stormwater canals is leading to a rat infestation
The City of Cape Town has defended its handling of dredged debris left in open fields in Macassar, citing factors like food sources, illegal dumping and surrounding environmental conditions for a growing rat infestation.
This comes as residents say the City's own inaction has fuelled the problem.
The debris, left in piles at the corner of Musica Avenue and Sopraan Street, was deposited by City officials after the removal of litter, sediment and vegetation from stormwater canals in early June.
Since then, the debris has remained, with residents blaming the heaps for attracting rats into the neighbouring flats.
