Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Manoj Kumar Jha has moved the Supreme Court seeking the registration of first information reports against police officers who opened fire at protesters in Bihar demonstrating against alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, reported Live Law on Monday.The protests were held in solidarity with the youth agitation in Delhi to demand the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union education minister at the time. Pradhan resigned on Saturday.On Saturday, three protesters were injured after the police opened fire during a demonstration in Bihar’s Siwan district after the demonstrators allegedly threw stones at security personnel. The police had also opened fire during violent protests in Jehanabad on Thursday.Follow Scroll’s coverage of the youth protests here.In his petition, Jha sought directions from the Supreme Court to state governments to initiate criminal and disciplinary proceedings against police officers involved in incidents of alleged excessive force against protesters.He also sought compensation and cost of medical care for those injured in the police action, reported Live Law.The Rajya Sabha MP urged the Supreme Court to direct state governments not to intimidate, threaten or detain students who participated in the protests.He said that the states should disclose the number and details of FIRs that have been registered against the students for participating in protests between July 20 and July 25.This came in the wake of reports that the Bihar Police had arrested nearly 450 persons who participated in the protests on Saturday.Jha’s petition will be heard on Tuesday, along with a batch of pleas alleging that the police used excessive force against protesters who were marching to Parliament on July 20 as part of a demonstration called by the Cockroach Janta Party political campaign.The agitation in Delhi started on June 6, when the Cockroach Janta Party began a protest at Jantar Mantar to demand the resignation of Pradhan.On July 20, thousands joined the protest two days after the police forcibly took activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a hunger strike for three weeks, to hospital. Their march to Parliament was met with a crackdown by the police. Dozens were injured as the police used lathis, fired tear gas shells and pellet guns against the demonstrators.The police action turbocharged the agitation, which spread to other parts of the country.Police officers suspendedSuperintendent of Police Puran Kumar Jha said on Monday that the police officers who fired at the protesters with an AK-47 gun in Siwan during Saturday’s demonstration have been suspended, reported The Hindu.The matter was flagged before the Supreme Court earlier in the day.Additionally, Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday asked Union Home Minister Amit Shah whether he had ordered the use of lethal force against students during the youth protests.Edited by Tanya Shrivastava.Also read: Delhi hospital reports show pellet wounds on journalist covering students’ protests
