M.K. Raghavan, MP, has raised serious concerns in the Lok Sabha under Rule 377 (matters of public importance) over the police crackdown on students who took part in the recent series of protests at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. He sought immediate disciplinary action against the police officers involved, besides requesting a judicial probe to identify those responsible.Mr. Raghavan alleged that the physical assault and detention of student demonstrators constituted a blatant violation of the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution. He described the students behind the agitation as “architects of India’s future” and said their protest was intended to raise their voices against pressing national issues, including question paper leaks, rising unemployment and administrative repression.
