McKenzie’s bid to halt probe into R3m raised while he was Central Karoo mayor

Western Cape Local Government MEC, Anton Bredell, said the province will oppose the court application brought by the leader of the Patriotic Alliance, Gayton McKenzie, to stop a provincial forensic investigation into the affairs of the Central Karoo District Municipality.

McKenzie, also the National Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, is seeking to terminate the Provincial Government's Section 106 investigation into the affairs of the Central Karoo District Municipality.

In papers filed in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, McKenzie’s legal representative Eugene Botha and Fezicube (Pty) Ltd, the event management company that organised the Bring New Life to the Desert gala dinner in Sandton, is seeking an order declaring that Bredell’s probe, instituted on 23 August 2023, automatically came to an end when the 90-day statutory deadline expired in November of that year.

McKenzie is reported to have raised about R3 million at a gala dinner while he was the mayor of the Central Karoo District Municipality, which he claims was “to undertake the projects he had announced as part of his 100-day plan”.
