Former Minister and Karkala MLA V. Sunil Kumar alleged on Sunday that the police continue to act as puppets of the ruling government and are stymieing the voice of the Opposition. In a statement on X condemning the police for issuing notice to C.T. Ravi, MLC, in a case registered against over for his alleged derogatory statements during a protest, Mr. Kumar said the High Court had recently criticised the State police’s actions.Home Minister Priyank Kharge should know that the freedom of free speech and expression he enjoys also applies to Mr. Ravi, the MLA said. He said Mr. Kharge spoke in a manner that questioned those raising their voice against persons speaking in support of Umar Khalid. The Minister remained blind to statements made by ‘urban naxals’ against the country, the elected government and Hindu beliefs. IPS officers are being used not to arrest criminals but to arrest those accused of making inflammatory speeches and those posting derogatory content on social media, the MLA added.“The arrogance of power has made Mr. Kharge blind and deaf, while his talk continues unbridled. Mr. Kharge, power does not stay with you permanently. The countdown to your government’s fall has started. We know how to return the debt, with interest, (to Congress),” Mr. Kumar said.
