A delegation from the Udupi District Mahila Congress met Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar on Thursday, May 14, and urged that he file a case against V. Sunil Kumar, Karkala MLA, for circulating a false news clipping of The Hindu which showed the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi asking people not to purchase gold.In the memorandum submitted by the delegation led by Udupi District Mahila Congress president Jyoti Hebbar, it stated that Mr. Kumar posted on his Facebook account the image of a clipping from The Hindu without verifying the authenticity of the content.By doing so, Mr. Kumar has maligned the image of the former Prime Minister, who has contributed immensely to the development of the country. Mr. Kumar’s action, as a former Cabinet Minister, does not befit his stature. The Karkala MLA has committed a crime, and hence, an FIR should be registered against him, the delegation said in the memorandum submitted to Mr. Shankar.Mr. Shankar said the memorandum has been referred to the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Karkala sub-division, Vijay Prasad, for inquiry.
