Nathan Hendricks won SA's first medal of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Friday night, powering to gold in the men's S13 100m freestyle in a time of 54.54.
Nathan Hendricks delivered Team South Africa's first medal of the Commonwealth Games in golden fashion on Friday night, winning the men's S13 100m freestyle to cap a magical evening in the pool at Tollcross Swimming Centre in Glasgow that also saw Chad le Clos become the most decorated male athlete in Commonwealth Games history.
Hendricks powered home in 54.54 seconds to clinch the first title of South Africa's campaign, holding off a fast-finishing field after producing a superb final 50 metres.
"It was amazing. I didn't know how the outcome would come out but I'm happy it came out like this," Hendricks said afterwards.
"It was extreme. In that last 50 I knew I had to push hard because the guys next to me still had something in the tank to go for me, so I pushed and I pushed and I got it, thankfully."
