The opening session in the pool on day two offered an encouraging glimpse of what could lie ahead, with world champion Pieter Coetze breaking the Commonwealth Games record in the men's 50m backstroke heats ahead of Saturday's final.
When Coetze stopped the clock at 24.45 seconds, it served as another reminder of why the 21-year-old is regarded as one of Team SA's brightest gold medal prospects.
"I didn't know what to expect at all. I just said I'm going to go out there, not have any expectations and just see what happens. I'm glad that happened," a delighted Coetzé said afterwards.
