An air defense system operated by Greek military personnel in Saudi Arabia intercepted a drone launched from Yemen on Saturday, Greek authorities said.
In a statement, the Greek military said the Patriot battery of the Hellenic Force in Saudi Arabia (ELDYSA) destroyed the unmanned aerial vehicle over the Yanbu area at 11.10 a.m. Greek time, acting in accordance with its rules of engagement.
Earlier on Saturday, the Greek-operated Patriot system also intercepted two ballistic missiles launched from Yemen toward oil refineries in Yanbu.
Greece has deployed the US-made Patriot air defense battery in Saudi Arabia since 2021 under an agreement to help protect the kingdom’s critical energy infrastructure.
In March, the same defense system shot down two Iranian missiles fired at oil refineries in Saudi Arabia.
