The eThekwini Municipality has reached out to national and provincial Human Settlements departments to assist with informal settlement upgrading programmes in urban areas.
A report from the Human Settlements, Engineering and Transport Committee presented to the eThekwini Executive Committee (Exco) called for these departments to outline short-, medium-, and long-term interventions to address the identified challenges.
The municipality intends to engage with these departments on proposals to improve the implementation process within eThekwini’s housing delivery programme. In previous reports, the municipality had more than 600 informal settlements listed.
The report stated that the municipality continues to encounter a range of challenges, arising from its unique urban context, which adversely affect the successful implementation and completion of informal settlement upgrading projects.
