The Madlanga Commission has heard allegations that the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption exceeded its legal mandate by pursuing investigations, arrests and court action against senior SAPS leaders, intensifying scrutiny of the unit's powers and oversight.
Madlanga Commission this week has torn into what increasingly appears to be an unreal criminal case against SAPS Brigadier Dineo Mokwele, exposing glaring holes in the investigation and raising questions about how corruption charges were pursued in the first place.
In hours of tense testimony, commissioners dismantled key aspects of the investigation, challenged the legal basis for the criminal case and forced extraordinary concessions from the head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), Advocate Andrea Johnson.
By the end of the hearings, it was not Mokwele's appointment that appeared under the greatest pressure, but the investigation itself authorised by Johnson.
Mokwele was appointed in April 2024 to lead SAPS Crime Intelligence's Technical Support Services unit after joining the organisation from the private sector.
