There are now more obese than underweight children in the world for the first time, according to the children’s charity Unicef.

Around one in 10 children and young people are now thought to be affected by obesity, which carries an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular problems and asthma.

The study follows NHS research published earlier this year which found that 26 per cent of children aged two to 15 in England are overweight or living with obesity.

“National guidelines recommend that from the age of five, children should aim for around an hour of activity every day, ideally enough to get them moving, warmer and breathing a little faster,” says Dr Ravi Lukha, medical director at Bupa Health Insurance.
