The recent surge in diplomatic activity on the Cyprus issue is expected to dominate talks Saturday in Athens between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides.
The two leaders are scheduled to meet at 11.30 a.m., following a broader session involving delegations from the Greek and Cypriot governments and the two countries’ foreign ministers.
The meeting comes ahead of a planned July 27-29 visit to Cyprus by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who is expected to take an initiative aimed at reviving the process.
Under the current framework, the next step would be the convening of an informal five-party meeting before any move toward formal negotiations, if conditions allow.
On Friday, Christodoulides convened Cyprus’ National Council, which includes all political parties, to provide an update on the current situation. Similar meetings are expected in the coming days.
