Jakub Ruta, the Polish League of Legends midlaner known as Syzyf, won’t be competing in any Riot-sanctioned events for at least a year. The reason: he let a family member place bets on his own matches.
Riot Games handed down the 12-month suspension effective July 23, 2026, after Syzyf admitted to the violation during his stint with Onion Team in the Rift Legends 2026 Winter Split.
Where esports meets the betting economy
Riot has been walking this tightrope for years. The company partnered with Sportradar back in 2019 specifically to monitor betting irregularities across its competitive ecosystem.
Then in mid-2025, Riot took the relationship with gambling one step further by allowing betting sponsorships for its Tier 1 teams. In English: the biggest League of Legends organizations can now plaster sportsbook logos on their jerseys, but individual players can’t so much as let their cousin put $20 on a match.
