African National Congress eThekwini Regional Task Team coordinator Thanduxolo Sabelo says more expulsions are expected as the party moves to root out alleged spies and sleeper agents within its ranks ahead of the November 2026 local government elections.
The African National Congress (ANC) in the eThekwini Region has expelled Ward 8 councillor Marco Mbambo, accusing him of spying for the Democratic Alliance (DA) and planning to defect to the opposition party.
The announcement was made on Friday by ANC eThekwini Regional Task Team (RTT) coordinator Thanduxolo Sabelo during a media briefing in Musgrave, Durban.
"His membership of the ANC is now terminated and he is also terminated as a public representative of the ANC in Ward 8. He is no longer the ward councillor," Sabelo said.
"You will remember that the people of Ward 8 voted for the African National Congress in the last (local government) elections, and that is why the ANC is exercising its right to recall its ward councillor. We have recalled Mr Mbambo and expelled him with immediate effect."
