Germany’s Foreign Affairs Minister Johann Wadephul has confirmed that European markets have been sourcing fuel from Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery, as he visited Nigeria, South Africa and Mauritius to strengthen economic, energy and diplomatic ties between Germany and Africa.
Wadephul made the remarks during his four-day African tour, which covered Nigeria, South Africa and Mauritius.
The visit focused on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, energy, technology, skills development and security.
The tour builds on earlier engagements by Germany’s top diplomat in Africa, including visits to Ethiopia and Kenya in January and Morocco in April, as Berlin seeks stronger ties with the continent amid growing global competition.
Setting the tone for the visit, the German minister said Europe and Africa are “closely interconnected politically, economically, and in terms of security, and face many of the same challenges,” adding that “a strong Africa is in Germany's interest.”
