The Rachel Finlayson Pool is expected to showcase Durban lifeguard skills to commemorate World Drowning Prevention Day.
eThekwini Municipality lifeguards are expected to provide their insight and demonstrate their preparedness and rapid response capabilities at the Rachel Finlayson Swimming Pool on Friday.
This is in anticipation of World Drowning Prevention Day on Saturday. The theme for World Drowning Prevention Day 2026 is “Unite to turn the tide”. The Global Strategy for Drowning Prevention calls every sector and every level of society to one goal: Unite to reduce drowning by 35% by 2035.
As a leading coastal city, the municipality stated that it is taking a stand to prevent loss of life. In partnership with lifesaving organisations, the event will shine a spotlight on water safety, showcase lifesaving expertise, and reaffirm its commitment to protecting residents and visitors from preventable tragedy.
“The event will feature live rescue demonstrations by lifeguards, practical water safety and survival techniques, and educational displays highlighting how communities can play an active role in preventing drowning incidents,” the municipality stated.
