Okinawa is perfect for travellers looking for a tropical beach getaway.
Dreaming of cherry blossoms, neon-lit streets, ancient temples or tropical beaches? Visiting Japan has just become much easier for South African travellers.
As of May 2026, South Africans can apply for Japan’s electronic tourist visa (eVisa), making South Africa the only African country with access to Japan’s online tourist visa system for stays of up to 90 days.
According to Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Japan eVisa system allows eligible travellers to apply for a visa online and receive an electronic visa without visiting an embassy.
At present, the system is available for travellers applying for a single-entry, short-term tourist visa.
