Retail and food and beverage sales last month hit a record for June, benefiting from a recovery in the auto market, new store openings, more promotional campaigns and seasonal demand for cold beverages, data released yesterday by the Ministry of Economic Affairs showed. Retail sales increased 8 percent from a year earlier to NT$421.3 billion (US$13.06 billion) last month, rising for the fifth consecutive month and beating the ministry’s forecast of a 4 to 7 percent increase. Sales were driven mainly by increased purchases of cars, motorcycles, auto parts and accessories, which saw significant 19.1 percent year-on-year sales growth, the ministry said in a report.

Department stores, big-box stores and convenience stores, e-commerce and mail-order operators, as well as computer and home appliance outlets also contributed to sales growth during the month, rising from 3.2 to 8.9 percent, the report said. Retail fuel sales increased 11.9 percent due to rising crude oil prices, it said.
