Retailers clocked 6 per cent sales growth in June year-on-year as per latest estimates by the Retailers Association of India indicating steady consumer demand despite cautious spending environment. The growth was led by food & grocery and quick service restaurants.The industry body said that while consumers continue to spend selectively, demand remains resilient for essential and experience-led categories. While sales in food & grocery segment was up 10 per cent in June this year compared to last while sales of quick service restaurants was up 9 per cent. Footwear segment sales was up 8 per cent year-on-year while consumer durables & electronics segment recorded 7 per cent growth. Jewellery and apparel & clothing each grew 6 per cent, sales of beauty and wellness segment was up 5 per cent. Sports goods segment grew 4 per cent but furniture & furnishings grew a mere 1 per cent.Kumar Rajagopalan, Executive Director and CEO, Retailers Association of India (RAI), said, “The June 2026 survey highlights cautious retail landscape. While the intent to spend remains intact among Indian consumers, they are highly value-conscious, prompting retailers to pivot strategies quickly to sustain growth. Retailers are adapting with sharp value and efficiency and preparing for the upcoming festive season.”He added that retailers are maintaining disciplined inventory management, investing in technology-enabled decision-making, and strengthening omnichannel capabilities to improve customer engagement and operational efficiency. “Promotional strategies, value offerings, and digital transformation continue to play a critical role in sustaining growth amid evolving consumer preferences,” the industry body said. Retailers in the Western region reported growth of about 8 per cent and 7 per cent in the Northern region.
