Rice University Joins DOE Quantum Science Center to Advance Real-Time Quantum Error Correction

Rice University has officially joined the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Quantum Science Center (QSC), expanding its footprint in national fault-tolerant quantum computing R&D. Headquartered at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the QSC is one of five National Quantum Information Science Research Centers established under the National Quantum Initiative Act. Led by Tirthak Patel, assistant professor of computer science at Rice, the university’s research group will receive approximately $900,000 over five years from the center. The project will focus on developing, optimizing, and evaluating quantum error-correction (QEC) decoding algorithms engineered to run directly on classical High-Performance Computing (HPC) supercomputing architectures.
