Šranecké piesky combines towering dunes, rare species and a landscape unlike anywhere else in the country.
While Slovakia is known for its mountains and forests, one of the country's most unusual natural areas lies in the Záhorie region of western Slovakia. Known as Šranecké piesky, it is one of the largest inland sand dune complexes in Central Europe.
Nested between the Little Carpathians and the Morava River in the Malacky district, the protected area covers around 10 square kilometres.
Although it lies within the Záhorie military training area, the public can visit it when military exercises are not taking place.
Established as a protected area in 2012, Šranecké piesky is subject to Slovakia's third level of nature protection. Its most valuable features include extensive sand dunes, heathlands, and oak and pine forests.
