The Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos South-West, Anglican Communion, the Rt Revd Dr Ebenezer Adewole, on Tuesday said the church had not been silent on Nigeria’s challenges, arguing that the real problem was that many people no longer pay attention to its message.
Adewole also urged political leaders to see themselves as trustees of the people rather than custodians of personal wealth, saying genuine national transformation would only be possible when individuals embraced accountability and integrity.
The bishop spoke at a press conference at the Cathedral Church of Pentecost, Festac Town, Lagos, ahead of the first session of the Diocese’s inaugural Synod.
“We need to change our ways, change our thoughts and change our actions. Leaders should see themselves as trustees working for the benefit of the commonwealth and not for personal gain,” he said. Responding to questions on the church’s role in national governance, Adewole maintained that the church had continued to fulfil its prophetic responsibility by speaking out on national issues.
