OTTAWA—Mike Layton, a former Toronto city councillor and son of the late New Democratic Party leader Jack Layton, is considering a run for the NDP in the upcoming Beaches—East York federal byelection, the Star has learned.

Layton would be a big catch for Avi Lewis and the New Democrats, who have been shut out of Toronto by the Liberals since 2015 and currently hold no seats in the House of Commons from east of Winnipeg.
