The Section 89 Impeachment Committee has extended the deadline for political parties to submit additional nominations for an evidence leader in the inquiry into President Cyril Ramaphosa after members raised concerns over the availability of candidates and a possible perceived conflict of interest involving one of the nominees.
The committee, chaired by Makashule Gana, met on Wednesday to consider the draft terms of reference that will guide the inquiry and deliberate on candidates proposed for the appointment of an evidence leader.
The committee was informed that Parliament’s legal team had conducted due diligence on the nominated candidates, assessing their availability and whether they met the requirements set by the committee.
Gana reminded members that the committee’s role was to make a recommendation to Parliament, which remains the appointing authority.
