London (EFE).- British Prime Minister Andy Burnham presided over the first meeting of his cabinet on Tuesday, appointing political allies to key positions to advance his priorities, such as decentralizing power and implementing cost-of-living relief measures.
Although there has been a change in leadership at Downing Street, much of Keir Starmer’s team remains, with several ministers taking on new responsibilities within the government.
Louise Haigh, who served as Secretary of State for Transport from July to Nov. 2024, will now be responsible for coordinating the government’s actions and supporting the implementation of Burnham’s political agenda as Deputy Prime Minister. Haigh shares political roots with Burnham in northern England and backed him during the Labour leadership campaign.
John Healey, Minister of the Treasury, «Chancellor of the Exchequer,» takes over at the Treasury after serving as Minister of Defense under Starmer. Healey resigned from that position in protest at the defense sector’s underfunding under the former prime minister.
He has experience at the Treasury, where he served as Economic Secretary and later as Financial Secretary from 2002 to 2007 during Tony Blair’s administration.
