Among the pressures facing the new Government is the growing demand to block sex offenders and other violent prisoners from being let out of jail early under the flagship Sentencing Act.

The legislation, passed this year, is meant to tackle the prison overcrowding crisis in England and Wales.

But as this programme has revealed, survivors of rape and child abuse have responded with horror and panic after being told that their perpetrators may be eligible for release earlier than expected, in some cases after only a third of their sentence.
