The Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) of the Coimbatore District (Rural) Police on Tuesday arrested five persons and seized 70 grams of methamphetamine, a synthetic narcotic drug, which they had smuggled into the district from Bengaluru.The arrested have been identified as A. Jasith (30) from Thrissur district in Kerala, K. Ajmal (29) and Mohammed Ali (27) from Mattathukad near Anaikatti in Kerala, S. Balaji (27) from No.24 Veerapandi near Thadagam near Coimbatore, and A. Abuthahir (24) from K.K.Pudur near Saibaba Colony in Coimbatore.Preliminary investigation by the police revealed that the accused planned to sell the drug in Coimbatore and neighbouring areas of Kerala.The police said that a PEW team from Periyanaickenpalayam initially apprehended four persons. The police found that they purchased the drug from Bengaluru and brought it to Coimbatore for peddling. They also disclosed the involvement of a fifth individual, whom the special team arrested on Tuesday afternoon.The police also seized a car used by the accused to transport the contraband.
