Nearly four years after bullets tore through the Centurion Golf Estate, security guard Bethuel Mzamo Cele found himself reliving the terrifying ordeal in the Johannesburg High Court on Tuesday, his voice faltering with emotion as he recalled the night gunmen armed with AK-47 rifles opened fire and narrowly missed killing him.
At one point during his testimony, the memories became overwhelming. Cele paused as he recounted the chaos that unfolded around him, forcing proceedings to briefly halt while he gathered himself before continuing.
Cele was the first witness called by the state in the trial of Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala and his four co-accused. Testifying through an isiZulu interpreter, he described in vivid detail the events of August 10, 2022.
Nearly four years later, he told the court the memories remained as fresh as ever.
