Former Sergeant Abraham Hercules Engelbrecht, 61, and former Sergeant Pieter Stander, 60, were found guilty of the premeditated murder of Caiphus Nyoka, a student activist and a member of the Congress of South African Students (COSAS).
The sentencing of the two former apartheid police sergeants who were convicted of killing anti-apartheid student activist Caiphus Nyoka has been delayed again in the Pretoria High Court sitting in Benoni.
Sergeants Abraham Hercules Engelbrecht, 61, and Pieter Stander, 60, were found guilty of premeditated murder of Nyoka, who was also a member of the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) on December 2, 2025.
During their appearance, Engelbrecht’s legal counsel brought an application for the postponement of the sentencing proceedings citing ill health.
According to Engelbrecht’s defence, his client needs to consult with a specialist for sentencing proceedings could commence, as well as the need to obtain a pre-sentence report from the Department of Correctional Services.
