Two South African police constables sentenced for 14 years each fot the murder of detainee.
Two Honeydew police constables have been sentenced to 14 years’ direct imprisonment each for the murder of a detainee who died after being assaulted inside police holding cells in 2019 in Gauteng.
The sentences were handed down following the conviction of 43-year-old Constable Rudzani Ernest Marumo and 32-year-old Thabang Gerald Makgotla for murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), in a case described by authorities as a serious abuse of police power.
According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), the incident occurred at the Honeydew Police Station holding cells in October 2019, where the victim, 40-year-old Thando Gazu, was allegedly assaulted and tortured while in custody.
IPID confirmed that Gazu died while still detained at the station.
