Four Police officers jailed for 15 years over R1.2 million robbery and kidnapping scheme

Four South African Police Service (SAPS) officers and a police informer have been sentenced to an effective 15 years’ direct imprisonment each after being convicted of orchestrating the robbery of approximately R1.2 million from three foreign nationals and kidnapping the victims during an unlawful operation in Randburg.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on Wednesday welcomed the sentencing handed down by the Randburg Magistrates’ Court against Walter Enow Agbor, Tebogo Michael Moeketse, Choema Eric Moabelo, Isram Moaone Phala and Kagiso Arthur Masibi.

The five accused were convicted on multiple charges, including robbery, corruption, kidnapping, theft and defeating the ends of justice.

NPA spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole said the offences stemmed from an unlawful operation conducted in Randburg on 8 May 2018, during which a Nigerian national and two Congolese nationals were targeted and dispossessed of about R1.2 million.
