Former Miss South Africa finalist and Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 winner Chidimma Adetshina was back in court on Monday as she fights the Department of Home Affairs’ bid to deport her from South Africa.
The case started as a dispute over her citizenship and eligibility to enter Miss South Africa, but has now become a bigger legal battle involving immigration law, detention powers and the rights of people whose identity documents are disputed.
Proceedings in the Cape Town Regional Court on Monday have reached a standstill, with the matter adjourned to allow legal parties more time to find a resolution.
The matter was interrupted after the court considered a recent Western Cape High Court ruling dealing with immigration detention powers.
