Refugees gather outside the Home Affairs Refugees Reception Centre in Durban, seeking safety and support amid ongoing challenges.
The standoff outside the Home Affairs Refugees Reception Centre on Che Guevara (Moore) Road in Durban has reached an impasse following the national government’s confirmation that it will not implement a separate reintegration programme for the group of displaced refugees camping there since mid-May.
The refugees allege that they have attempted to reintegrate into the communities they lived in, but they were forced to return to the street.
Refugee Bishop Rafael Bahebwa said they were advised to reintegrate but 186 have remained outside the refugee centre as they do not have a place to go to.
“Our people are afraid to go back,” Bahebwa said.
