Employees of the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) have launched a strike over a raft of demands on behalf of contract workers of the company.They demanded regularisation of contract workers, filling of vacancies, job security and recognition of the services of the contract workers among others.The protesters, led by contract workers’ association, said many of the contract staff, with service of over two decades, still remained in contractual positions.Despite there being over 70,000 vacancies in the Energy Department, these workers were not being considered for those positions, they said. The protesters demanded employment on compassionate grounds to the family members of over 250 contractual workers who died in harness.Also, contract workers played the same role as permanent staff in disaster relief and rehabilitation.
