In a statement released at the weekend, the US Department of State advised Americans worldwide to "exercise increased caution", citing a complex security environment with the potential for further escalation.
It warned that US diplomatic facilities outside the Middle East have previously been targeted and that groups supportive of Iran could target US interests overseas. The department also cautioned that flight cancellations and periodic airspace closures may disrupt international travel.
