The United States has issued a worldwide security alert, urging Americans across the globe to exercise increased caution due to heightened tensions in the Middle East and the potential for further escalation.
In an advisory released by the U.S. Department of State, officials warned that the current security environment remains complex and unpredictable, with the possibility of sudden developments that could affect travellers and U.S. interests abroad.
The department specifically advised Americans currently in the Middle East to remain vigilant and prepare for possible flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures and other travel disruptions. It noted that while some airlines have delayed the resumption of previously suspended services, others have cancelled certain routes altogether.
The advisory also urged Americans outside the region to reconsider non-essential travel to and through the Middle East. Those who choose to travel were encouraged to closely monitor airport operations and airline schedules before departing.
According to the State Department, U.S. diplomatic facilities, including those outside the Middle East, have previously been targeted. It warned that Iran and groups aligned with Iran could target additional U.S. interests overseas, including American businesses, institutions and locations associated with U.S. citizens.
