Greek shipping company Dynacom Tankers announced that, on Monday, July 20, amid escalating conflict between Iran and the United States, two tankers managed by the firm were struck by projectiles of unidentified origin while transiting off the coast of Oman.
According to a company statement, the Malta-flagged tanker Kavomaliis caught fire in its engine room after being struck by two projectiles. Following the activation of the onboard fire suppression system, the vessel’s captain ordered a full evacuation to protect the crew.
Dynacom reported that all crew members were safely rescued by Omani authorities and brought ashore. The company added that it remains in close contact with regional authorities to monitor the vessel’s condition and investigate the details of the incident.
British maritime risk management firm Vanguard stated that the attack took place while the tanker was sailing approximately eight nautical miles northwest of Kumzar, Oman.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), which had earlier reported a fire aboard the tanker, confirmed that no environmental pollution resulting from the incident had been reported so far. At the time of publication, the origin of the projectiles and the entity responsible for the attack had not been independently verified.
