Elon Musk’s xAI just did something remarkably bold: it shipped an AI product designed to compete with Microsoft’s Copilot, and it’s running inside Microsoft’s own software. The Grok add-in for Microsoft Excel, along with companion tools for Word and PowerPoint, landed in the Microsoft Marketplace in mid-June 2026, giving spreadsheet jockeys a new option for AI-powered data analysis.
What Grok actually does inside Excel
The Excel add-in lets users query their data in plain English. The tool writes actual formulas directly into Excel’s formula bar. It can generate embedded charts, run scenario modeling, and handle data analysis without forcing users to leave their workbook.
The PowerPoint add-in rolled out around June 16, with the Word version following roughly two days later. The full suite continued its staggered launch through late June. Musk had teased the expansion into productivity tools back in April 2026, following earlier demos of Grok’s document generation capabilities.
While the add-ins are free to download from the Microsoft Marketplace, actually using them requires a paid xAI subscription. Plans include SuperGrok, Heavy, Business, and Enterprise tiers.
