Kerala’s existing power crisis is primarily the result of the policies pursued by the previous Left Democratic Front government (LDF), Electricity Minister Sunny Joseph said on Monday (July 20), adding that the present government is taking measures at multiple levels to overcome the situation.Speaking to reporters in Kasaragod, the Minister said the government’s immediate priority is to ensure an uninterrupted electricity supply as power demand continues to rise across the State. He said all possible steps are being taken to avoid or minimise power restrictions and prevent inconvenience to consumers.Mr. Joseph said the ongoing monsoon has brought relief and is expected to boost hydroelectric power generation, which would help ease the current supply situation.Looking ahead, the Minister said the government is also considering nuclear power projects to meet Kerala’s long-term electricity requirements. Pointing out that nuclear power plants are operating successfully in several countries, he said Kerala, as part of the global community, cannot rule out such possibilities.He said the government would hold discussions at all levels with experts, government agencies, and the public before taking any decision on nuclear power projects, with the objective of ensuring the State’s long-term energy security.
