The Adirampattinam Train Passengers Welfare Association in Thanjavur district has requested the Southern Railway to construct an overbridge at the railway level-crossing on the Adirampattinam-Rajamadam East Coast Road section. The level-crossing has become a choking point on the road which witnesses high density of vehicular traffic. It is a primary arterial road used daily by thousands of commuters including school and college students, heavy commercial vehicles, emergency medical services and private buses, association secretary Abdul Razak said in a memorandum to the Southern Railway General Manager recently.Frequent closure of the railway gate to allow train movement causes gridlock on the East Coast Road resulting in travel delays, fuel wastage, environmental pollution, and potentially life-threatening delays for ambulances trying to reach the nearby hospitals, said Mr. Abdul Razak who is the member of the Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee, Tiruchi. With Southern Railway increasing passenger and freight movements on this crucial section, the gate closure durations are set to rise exponentially which will inevitably compound existing traffic holdup and public distress. Given the strategic importance of the East Coast Road, the Southern Railway should proactively coordinate with the State government authorities and sanction the construction of an overbridge at the level crossing.Replacing the level-crossing with an overbridge will permanently eliminate a major bottleneck, guarantee uninterrupted traffic flow, and ensure the safety of both rail and road users, Mr. Abdul Razak said while seeking early intervention for this public welfare project.
