Lenovo is restructuring its entire esports sponsorship playbook, prioritizing tournament-level deals over individual team partnerships in a move designed to maximize eyeballs per dollar spent.
Volker Düring, Lenovo’s Vice President and General Manager for its Intelligent Device Group, laid out the strategy in a recent interview. The logic is straightforward: tournaments aggregate audiences from dozens of teams and games into a single broadcast, while team sponsorships tie your brand to one roster’s fate.
The tournament play
Lenovo has locked in partnerships as the Official PC and Gaming Hardware provider for the Esports World Cup 2025 in Riyadh and EWC 2026 in Paris. Both events feature prize pools exceeding $70 million, making them among the most lucrative competitive gaming gatherings on the planet.
The company’s earlier approach looked quite different. In 2022, Lenovo signed a multi-year deal with Complexity Gaming and supported ESL’s Intel Extreme Masters events.
