Aston Villa have agreed a deal to sign Brazilian midfielder João Gomes from Wolverhampton Wanderers for approximately €40 million. The agreement was reached around July 16, 2026, with Gomes departing Wolves’ pre-season training camp in Portugal to complete the formalities.
For Villa, this is less a luxury signing and more a structural necessity. The club lost Youri Tielemans and is dealing with a long-term injury to Amadou Onana. That is two central midfielders gone from their rotation at roughly the same time.
Why Gomes, and why now
The timing is notable. Gomes had only recently extended his contract with Wolves in April 2025, tying himself to the club until 2030 with an option for a further year. That extension was presumably designed to protect Wolves’ asset. Instead, it has given Villa a clearly priced commodity with a long contract runway, making the negotiation more straightforward even if the fee reflects that security.
He was mid-session at Wolves’ Algarve pre-season camp when the call came. He left Portugal for a medical. That is how quickly a transfer can pivot from hypothetical to real when both clubs are motivated to move.
