Authorities on Sunday inaugurated a new desalination facility on the Cycladic island of Amorgos, aiming to strengthen water supplies as the island faces growing demand from residents and visitors.
The facility, located near the island’s main port of Katapola, was inaugurated by Maritime and Insular Policy Minister Vasilis Kikilias and local officials. It will produce 1,050 cubic meters of drinking water per day.
Kikilias said managing water resources is one of the greatest challenges facing Greece’s islands, particularly amid the effects of climate change and rising tourism activity.
“We are obliged to plan for the future and consider what infrastructure our islands need so they can withstand challenges and play a leading role over the next 25 years,” Kikilias said. “Until there is perhaps another new technology in this direction, we will continue to strengthen our islands.” [AMNA]
