Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for missile and drone strikes on al-Azraq Air Base in Jordan on July 18, targeting what it described as US fighter jet shelters and aircraft parking areas. The IRGC says it destroyed 20 hangars and killed dozens of US troops, citing intelligence from individuals inside Jordan.
Jordan’s military tells a very different story. According to Jordanian officials, multiple projectiles were intercepted, and no major damage or fatalities occurred. US officials have acknowledged injuries among service members but say claims of significant casualties remain unverified.
What happened at al-Azraq
The IRGC framed the strikes as part of “Operation Nasr 2,” a retaliatory campaign responding to previous US actions that reportedly resulted in Iranian casualties. The Guard claims at least two US fighter jets were destroyed during the attack.
Al-Azraq Air Base is a critical logistics and air operations hub for US forces in the region.
