Police arrest Nigerian in India over romance scam, drug trafficking

A 27-year-old Nigerian national has been arrested in India for allegedly overstaying his medical visa and being in possession of 5.085kg of methamphetamine valued at more than Rs10 crore.

According to Times of India on Saturday, the suspect, identified as Obase Prosper, was arrested during a joint operation by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force and the Narcotics Control Bureau’s Delhi Zonal Unit at RK Puram, Delhi, on Friday evening.

According to the STF, Prosper, an indigene of Imo State, entered India on a medical visa in 2023 but remained in the country after the visa expired.

Authorities also alleged that he was a key member of an international romance scam syndicate that targeted Indian victims through fake social media accounts.
