The northern districts of West Bengal are expected to receive heavy rainfall over the next two days due to an active southwest monsoon, the IMD said, as it warned of possible landslides in the hilly areas and flash floods in low-lying areas of the region.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that water levels may rise in some rivers in the region, including Teesta, Torsa, Jaldhaka and Raidak, as incessant rain continued to batter the north Bengal districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar since Saturday.According to the IMD, extremely heavy rain is likely in the districts of Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar, and very heavy rain in the other sub-Himalayan districts.Heavy rain will also occur in the south Bengal districts of North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Howrah, Purba and Paschim Medinipur and Jhargram between July 21 and 23, it said.Murti (17 cm) in Jalpaiguri district recorded West Bengal's highest rainfall in 24 hours till 8.30 am on Sunday, the weather office said.Other places that recorded very heavy rainfall during the period include Jalpaiguri (14 cm), Dalgaon tea estate (13 cm) in Alipurduar, Nagrakata (13 cm) in Jalpaiguri, Raidak tea estate (12 cm) in Alipurduar, Buxaduar (11 cm) in Alipurduar and Maynaguri (10 cm) in Jalpaiguri, according to the IMD data.The weather office forecast a cloudy sky with light to moderate rain in the state capital Kolkata over the next few days.Published on July 19, 2026
