Banyana Banyana's Hildah Magaia is thrilled to be back at the continent’s biggest showpiece, the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), saying her return is an opportunity to give back to the nation while helping to mould the young players coming through the ranks.
Magaia became a household name in continental football back in 2022, steering Banyana to their maiden WAFCON crown after scoring a decisive brace in a 2-1 victory over hosts Morocco in the final.
That iconic performance etched her name into the history books. She became only the second South African player to score a winning brace in a senior continental final, mirroring Mark Williams' historic feat that led Bafana Bafana to their maiden Africa Cup of Nations title in 1996.
Magaia’s star continued to shine brightly as she secured a move abroad and later hogged the headlines at the 2023 Fifa Women's World Cup. There, she scored in a dramatic 3-2 victory over Italy, helping Banyana become the first senior South African national team to qualify for the knockout stage of a World Cup.
